Lecture notes on Greek meter, ca. 1841-1874.

Ernst von Leutsch's handwritten notes for lectures he gave on Greek meter, at the University of Göttingen. The manuscript contains section numbers and titles that correspond to those found in Leutsch's book Grundriss zu Vorlesungen über die griechische Metrik (Gōttingen: Dieterich, 1841; two copies are included in Ms. Coll. 841, Box 40). Since the book is essentially an outline accompanied by quotations and bibliographical references, the present notes do not in any way resemble a manuscript for the published book; rather, it seems likely that Leutsch had his own book in hand as a guide when first preparing these lecture notes. The scattering of bibliographical references dating from the 1850s through 1860s provides additional support for this assumption; the latest date that could be found cited in the manuscript was 1874 (in part 1, Box 13). The manuscript comprises individual gatherings of leaves that are occasionally numbered according to varying schemes, and often not numbered at all; the gatherings also contain a variety of loose, unnumbered leaves. The variations in appearance suggest that Leutsch added to the notes over the course of time. Given the general absence of contemporary numbering, the details of the original or intended order are in doubt; however, by following the sporadic references to section numbers and titles or headings that correspond to those found in the book, one can correlate the parts of the manuscript roughly to the outline presented in the book, as follows; part 1. Introduction (Einleitung), Sections 1-44, with some references to later sections (Box 13); part 2. Sections 45-74 (Box 13); part 3. Sections 75-94 (Box 14); part 4. Sections 95-113 (Box 14); part 5. Sections 115-149 (Box 15); part 6: Sections 149-191 (Box 15); part 7: Sections 193-206 (Box 16); part 8: sections 207-227, 438-440 (Box 16). The section numbers referenced in the final part of the manuscript appear to reflect gaps in the extant notes related to the material addressed in roughly the second half of the book.
